The southeast United States is a lovely place to visit, with mostly temperate weather and many wonderful bed and breakfasts. Among my picks for the most unique bed and breakfasts in the southeast United States are an underwater inn, yurts, an 18th-century plantation, a monastery, and a B&B especially designed for book lovers.

A bill to allow more bed and breakfasts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu failed to pass city council this week, meaning the official B&B limit will remain at 55, a number established 20 years ago. According to an article in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the bill which failed on a 4-4 vote would have allowed up to 1,275 bed and breakfasts to operate legally. Various reports indicate that there are hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of illegal B&Bs currently operating on the island. An editorial in the Star-Bulletin said the bill should be revised to provide for better enforcement and then passed.

The northeast United States has a rich history, and that history has given us some wonderful bed and breakfasts. Among my picks for the most unique bed and breakfasts in the northeast United States are two lighthouses, a monastery, a castle, and the scene of one of the most infamous crimes of all-time.

A proposal to increase the number of bed and breakfasts on the island of Oahu could come up for a final vote on Wednesday night, according to various newspaper reports. According to the Pacific Business News, Bill 7 would permit up to 1,275 bed and breakfasts to operate in residential neighborhoods. Such facilities have been banned for the past 20 years. "City officials estimate that about 50 licensed B&Bs currently operate on Oahu," the Pacific Business News reported. "There are also an unknown number of units believed to be operating illegally."
