Bed and Breakfast Used as Prize for Sheriff's Deputy

Thursday May 20, 2004
Over Memorial Day weekend, drivers in Howard County, Indiana, will be pulled over at checkpoints designed to make sure they're wearing seat belts. If you're not wearing a seat belt, you'll get a ticket. According to the Kokomo Perspective, sheriff's deputies are being given an extra incentive to write tickets: a free night's stay at a local bed and breakfast will be given to the one who writes the most.

At least one deputy is concernd about how this contest will look in the eyes of the general public: "I would hope that a citizen receives a ticket due to the fact that they violated the law, not because a police officer wants to outdo his fellow officers for a free night in a bed and breakfast," wrote Jerry Jumper in a letter to the editor of the Perspective.
