Family Considerations in Running a B&B

Sunday November 4, 2007
If you're thinking about opening a bed and breakfast, one of the first things you need to do is discuss it with your immediate family. Some people may consider becoming an innkeeper the ideal way of having the best of both worlds -- family and work -- but think again. If your family members aren't willing to give up or share some of their space with potential guests, you have a problem. This article is part of our series of worksheets for aspiring innkeepers.

This was a very good article. Our family has owned a Bed and Breakfast for the past five years, and I can assure you that it is a family business whether the kids participate or not. Every aspect of their lives are affected by the operation of their home. Our daughter rejected the concept initially. She was in her last year of high school and it was not “the cool” thing for her. Fortunately, she went off to college after our first year, and now she has come to accept our lifestyle compeletely. Our son, a few years younger loved the whole idea and has been very helpful. He is good with computers, so we put him in charge of helpin us with that and getting the house set for wireless internet for the guests. So, for aspiring innkeepers with kids, trust that there will be issues to work through and do share your business with your children. This is wonderful advice for people starting into the Bed and Breakfast business - I wish there was information like this available 16 years ago when I started. I was lucky to have trained as a 5 star Hotel Manager for 8 years beforehand. I don’t know about the United States but here in Ireland people’s expections and demands are very high. The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel - We’ve just extended and refurbished in 2007 to now accommodate up to 40 guests per night. Any advice needed see www.almarabb.com
We also started a unique company called Almara Accommodations Dublin which is a free accommodation finding/booking service for Dublin. Enquiry/advice form is www.almarabb.com/almaraa.htm
