Are Higher Gas Prices Cutting Into Your Plans?
Tuesday May 27, 2008
With gas (and food, for that matter) prices going up, money is tighter for everyone. Because of the impact fuel prices are having on the cost of air travel, my husband and I probably will not take a long trip this summer. We are much more likely to visit someplace within a six-hour drive or so of our home.
Have the increasing costs forced you to cut back in other areas (such as travel)? If so, what are you cutting back on? And what small splurges do you still allow yourself or your family? Please click on the "comments" link below and share your thoughts!

I get sticker shock when I fill up my car. I can’t believe how fast those numbers spin around. Yes, we’re cutting back — mostly on clothes. I might want some new clothes for summer, but I think I’m just going to make do.
Higher gas prices are definitely having an impact. My wife and I will be taking a vacation this year, and we will still stay at a B&B — but it will be somewhere MUCH closer to our home. Driving is just getting too expensive.
I own and operate “Vacation Rental” apartments in an East Coast Florida Beachside Community. We are entering our Fifth Year in business, and have developed a loyal customer base. While Repeat and Referral guests continue to make reservations, the phones have become frighteningly silent as regards “New” business.
We have expanded our advertising, but our inquiry’s are almost non-existent.
Gas prices approaching $4.50 per gallon in the Southwest have impacted travel significantly. Add to that the increased airline fares and we’ve decided to stay closer to home this year.
A B&B within a few hundred miles or less is still getting away, and just as pleasurable, if you look for the right place. We’ve found you can stay almost on your doorstep and be a world away, if you find the right accommodations and the right hosts!
I closed my bed and breakfast which I operated since 01, there was barely any business this winter(we are one mile from a major NYS ski center) and people only wanted to stay one night. It was not worth all the cleaning, up keep etc. to keep this small place running.
We are now for sale as it is too expensive to run in the wintertime.
