Maui Bed and Breakfast Legislation Advances
Saturday November 8, 2008
Legislation to regulate bed and breakfasts on the Hawaiian island of Maui moved forward recently, according to a report in The Maui News. The Maui County Council Planning Committee approved a bill which would cap the number of inns in each region of the island: 48 bed and breakfasts would be allowed in Hana, 100 in South Maui, 40 Upcountry, 88 in Paia-Haiku, 36 in Central Maui and 88 in West Maui. It also caps the number of bedrooms per establishment, regulates where the owner must live, and establishes a three-year intial permit, with five-year renewals after that.
