Every so often a new word or phrase appears in our lexicon. One that recently caught my attention is 'mini-moon' - a clever description of an abbreviated honeymoon that lasts seven days or less (if you're curious, my honeymoon with Nancy has lasted 15 years).

An online survey conducted by bedandbreakfast.com between March and April 2011 found:

• One out of three couples being married within the next year are switching to more affordable 'mini-moons'.

• Of these, one-third are considering enjoying all seven days at a bed and breakfast.

• Catering to this group, nearly 200 inns on bedandbreakfast.com offer special rates on wedding, honeymoon, and other romance packages.

One thing that impressed me is learning that some clever newlyweds are theming their 'mini-moon' by finding inns that cater to shared interests such as adventures, culinary classes, spas, or a beach break. If someone offers an ice cream-themed mini-moon, I'm there. Still, this new phrase has created a new approach to new beginnings, which gives innkeepers and newlyweds something to celebrate. Expect to see more inns catering to this niche in the months and years ahead.
