When you first enter the B&B industry, you hear people talk about the "Seven-year Itch" -- that's the time period that an new innkeeper will go from loving the inn to accepting the inn to wanting to sell the inn and move on to a new adventure. That said, I'm amazed when I talk to innkeepers who are still in the business after 20, 25, and even 30-plus years. We've been going at it for a dozen years now and we've noticed telltale signs that the honeymoon's over... little things like telling guests we're full simply because we're tired and don't want company. If you've sold -- or are thinking of selling -- your B&B, what were the warning bells that told you it was time to move on?
