Hiding From the Innkeeper?

By January 4, 2013

Follow me on:

Happy New YearWith all of the partying that recently went on for the holidays, I was reminded of something that happened at our inn shortly after we took ownership. In the den, one of our three common rooms, a group of people sounded like they were having a good time, but every time we came into the room to say "hi" or ask if we could get them anything, the entire room went silent.

This went on two or three times (they were in there for most of the day), until on one of our visits my wife looked at one of the guests who was sitting in a strange position and said, "Is that a blender between your feet?"

Sure enough, it was. It turns out the guests were making margaritas upstairs in their rooms and bringing them down to the den to enjoy with their friends. Because they knew that the previous owners frowned on alcohol consumption, they felt like they had to hide from us. Nothing could have been further from the truth. I enjoy a good cocktail as much as the next person and, as I recently posted in my B&B resolutions for 2013, I believe in enjoying B&Bs with friends, so soon, my wife and I had joined the guests in their celebration.

But this incident reminded of one more resolution that should have made the list: be honest with your innkeeper! When you make your reservation, be sure to tell the innkeeper what kind of getaway you're looking for. Usually, the innkeeper will be happy to oblige you and will often go out of his way to give you the kind of trip you're looking for. But if your requests don't fit with the nature of the inn, he'll tell you that too and save you both a bit of an awkward time!

So let's hear it innkeepers: What were some of your more humorous guest moments from 2012?

We just reciently had a couple stay and they used 1 and 1/2 bottles of bubble bath while running the water in the whirlpool.
When they turned it on there were bubbles everywhere! I went in to do maid service and there still were bubbles around the tub from earlier in the day. I am sure they will be talking about that for awhile :)
