B&Bs Reaching Out to Men

More bed and breakfasts are reaching out to male travelers with football-themed weekends and other special offers, according to a recent article in The New York Times. "The focus on men is partly an outgrowth of a larger movement in the bed-and-breakfast industry to shake certain stereotypes," according to the article. One innkeeper told the newspaper that even if men don't decide to book a specific package, "its existence helps potential male clients feel they could be comfortable staying at the inn."

2009 a Tough Year for Some B&Bs

2009 was a tough year for some bed and breakfasts, as the poor economy took a heavy toll on many tourism-related businesses. One thread in our discussion forum mentions four Florida inns that closed this year, along with two in New Hampshire. One B&B in Jacksonville, Florida, recently held a sale of all its inventory before closing, with a portion of the proceeds going to a local charity.

New Maui B&B System Working

Although a bill to allow more bed and breakfasts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu failed to pass recently, a new system put in place on the island of Maui seems to be working well. According to an article in The Maui News, over the past year the local planning department "has processed and approved more than twice as many permits for the rentals as it did in the previous 11 years." The new law caps the number of B&Bs on Maui at 400; so far in 2009, 61 applications have been submitted and 33 have been approved.

B&B Opens; Still Dealing with Cricket Frog

The owners of the Glenmere Mansion in Chester, New York, originally built in 1911 as a country retreat and now open as a bed and breakfast with 19 suites and a modern American restaurant, are having to deal with an endangered species: the northern cricket frog. According to an article in The (Chester, New York) Chronicle, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has fined the inn's owners for failing to "submit a revised plan showing how they plan to conserve the habitat of the frog." Glenmere Mansion is located about an hour northwest of Manhattan.

Oahu B&B Bill Defeated

A bill to allow more bed and breakfasts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu failed to pass city council this week, meaning the official B&B limit will remain at 55, a number established 20 years ago. According to an article in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the bill which failed on a 4-4 vote would have allowed up to 1,275 bed and breakfasts to operate legally. Various reports indicate that there are hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of illegal B&Bs currently operating on the island. An editorial in the Star-Bulletin said the bill should be revised to provide for better enforcement and then passed.
