Top 3 Bed and Breakfasts for Guests with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

The innkeepers at these B&Bs have tried to make their accommodations suitable for guests with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and other environmental sensitivities. Cleaning is usually done without chemicals, there are no air fresheners or scented candles, and pillows and linens are usually hypo-allergenic. If you have MCS, you should always talk to the innkeepers in some detail before making a reservation.

Guests without MCS are also welcome at these B&Bs, but please don't wear fragrant perfume, smoke, or use other potentially problematic chemicals. Check with the innkeepers for any other restrictions.

1. Natural Bed and Breakfast Retreat

Tucson, Arizona

Owner L. Marc Haberman believes that "allergic reactions to toxic substances in our environment now constitute the single greatest source of illness in Western society," and he has taken steps to make the Natural Bed and Breakfast Retreat a haven from those toxins. On-site amenities include massage, aromatherapy, facials, nutritional counseling, relationship and tantra consulting. Four guest rooms are available. Rates range from $75 to $95 (single) and $90 to $110 (double) per night.

2. Walnut Lawn Bed and Breakfast

Lampeter, Pennsylvania

In the heart of Pennsylvania's Amish community, this 1909 colonial home features pocket doors, chestnut woodwork, and many quilts. One of the innkeepers is knowledgeable about the Amish and Mennonite cultures, and both can help you plan your days. Breakfasts are made with hormone-free milk and eggs from Amish and Mennonite farms, as well as local fruit and produce. The innkeepers "attempt to maintain a healthy, chemical-free environment" and strive to be environmentally conscious in other ways, as well. Four guest rooms are available. Rates range from $80 to $95 per night.

3. Oma's House

Euless, Texas

Innkeeper Linda Wolf was inspired to open her home to those with MCS after a friend's experience. No chemical air fresheners, candles or potpourri are used at this B&B homestay, which also provides fragrance-free soap and uses charcoal / HEPA air purifiers. Although the owners do have dogs, they're kept at least 15 feet from the patio. Four guest rooms are available. Rates range from $40 to $60 per night. Weekly rates are also available.
