Bed and Breakfasts in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

A quaint Victorian community

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

The town of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, has a definite charm -- quaint, Victorian... a town that time seems to have left alone.

Downtown, an easy walk from the historic Harry Packer Mansion and several other local bed and breakfasts, includes a number of must-see stops. The Asa Packer Mansion is next door to Harry's home and deserves a visit to learn more about the colorful and powerful Packer family.

In the heart of the town, at the aptly-named Hazard Square, you won't be able to miss seeing the Jersey Central Railroad Station, a former passenger station now converted into the town's Welcome Center, where you can learn more about the history of Jim Thorpe (formerly known as Mauch Chunk). Locomotives still leave the station every summer and fall, pulling tourists down the tracks along the Lehigh River.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church, built largely using the Packer fortune, was constructed into the hillside on Race Street and incorporates some early Tiffany windows into the Gothic Revival design. Tours of the church are available.

Walking through Jim Thorpe, you'll see many other architecturally significant buildings -- such as Millionaire's Row, a set of beautiful townhouses built between 1860 and 1890, and Stone Row, 16 rowhouses built by Asa Packer for certain employees of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Today, many of the homes on Stone Row are being used as storefronts for artists; one houses a local winery's retail outlet.

Also on the Lehigh River, you can enjoy whitewater rafting in the spring and slower rafting trips in the summer and fall. Several local companies provide rafting trips; when you make reservations at a B&B, be sure to ask the innkeepers to recommend one.
