Bed and Breakfasts in Algiers Point

Relaxing retreats across the river from the French Quarter of New Orleans

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

Settled in 1719 and separated from the French Quarter by the Mississippi River, Algiers Point is New Orleans' second oldest neighborhood. A 5-minute ferry ride drops passengers at the foot of Canal Street with the French Quarter to the right and the Convention Center and Warehouse/Arts and Central Business districts to the left.

In addition to providing amazing views of the city skyline, Algiers Point offers a small-town atmosphere and buildings dating from the late 19th-century and earlier (although many older ones in Algiers' upper section were destroyed in an 1895 fire).

Visitors can also tour Mardi Gras World and experience New Orleans' carnival atmosphere any time of year in a warehouse filled with props and figures created for floats used in parades throughout the world (including, of course, Mardi Gras).

Another accommodation, which is located two blocks from the ferry and has been featured in the local Tour of Homes, includes the Asian room, with a king bed, and the Romance room, with a queen bed. This late 1880s Creole building has a deck overlooking a garden and fish pond with fountain, as well as an enclosed sunroom; no children permitted.
