If you're planning a trip to New Orleans and want to soak up the unique atmosphere of the French Quarter, all of these small hotels and guest apartments are either in the French Quarter of New Orleans or within a couple of blocks.

Small Hotels

  • Cornstalk, The
A unique cast-iron fence forged in the mid-1800s to depict cornstalks intertwined with morning glories and pumpkin vines marks the Royal Street site of this 14-room Victorian hotel, which once served as the home of Judge Francois-Xavier Martin, the first chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court and author of the first history of Louisiana. Guests can expect such features as stained-glass windows, fireplaces, antiques, Oriental rugs and canopy beds; children are welcome. A continental breakfast is served in the guest room or on the front gallery, balcony or patio.

  • Hotel Maison de Ville and the Audubon Cottages
Host to such celebrities as Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Redford, the Hotel Maison de Ville is furnished with antiques, four-poster beds, marble basins and old brass hardware and contains sections that are thought to date from the mid-1700s. The main building, located at 727 Toulouse Street, plus the four former slave quarters (across the tropical courtyard) and the old carriage house (adjacent to the courtyard) hold 16 guest rooms; also available nearby on Dauphine Street are the seven private Audubon Cottages, which feature a pool for all guests in the midst of their courtyards. Breakfast is not included in standard rates, but the hotel offers an acclaimed restaurant next door.

  • Hotel Ste. Helene
Less than two blocks from Jackson Square, this small hotel on Chartres Street is listed on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks. A continental breakfast and champagne are served daily in the courtyard.

  • Hotel Villa Convento
Villa Convento offers 23 rooms, plus two suites on the fourth floor of the main house which include a king-size, four-poster, rice-carved bed and view of the river and the rooftops of the French Quarter. Coffee, tea and croissants are served daily in the courtyard of this 1833 Creole town house, located on Ursulines Street two blocks from the Mississippi River and French Market.

  • Lafitte Guest House
There are 14 guest rooms -- among the possible amenities are antiques, fireplace, balcony, latticed veranda and canopy bed -- at this four-story 1848 Creole town house on Bourbon Street at St. Philip. Guests are served a continental breakfast in their rooms and can enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres in the Victorian parlor during the evening social hour.

  • Melrose Mansion
Built in 1884 and located on Esplanade Avenue at Burgundy, this antique-filled Victorian mansion offers four rooms and four suites in the main building and one suite above the original carriage house. All suites contain whirlpool tubs; some accommodations feature a wet bar, stained-glass window, balcony, or marble bathroom. There is also a fitness suite and outdoor pool. Guests are served mimosas on arrival, as well as a continental breakfast each morning and wine each evening.

  • Nine-O-Five Royal Hotel
Ten rooms and three suites with balconies overlooking Royal Street -- all with period furnishings, kitchenettes and private entrances -- make up this 1890s child-friendly hotel with landscaped courtyard. Breakfast is not provided.

  • Soniat House
Located two blocks from the French Market in a residential section of Chartres Street, this 1829 Creole and Greek Revival style hotel (with two town houses plus former slave quarters) offers 20 rooms and 13 suites decorated with antiques, Oriental rugs and local artists' paintings; some accommodations have a Jacuzzi bath or balcony. Soniat House was chosen in Travel + Leisure's 2002 "World's Best" Readers' Poll as one of the Top 100 Hotels in the United States and Canada. It offers a wine cellar and honor bar; and breakfast, which is served in the guest room or the garden courtyard with fountain and lily pond, is available for an additional charge.

Guest Apartments

  • Bed and Beverage Guest Apartments
Among the accommodations provided by the Bed and Beverage Guest Apartments are two buildings located less than a block apart on St. Philip Street: The Royal St. Philip, with eight units and a courtyard pool, and the St. Philip Guest Apartments, with 13 units. There is an open bar each afternoon in the courtyard.

  • Biscuit Palace
Between Bourbon and Royal, this 1820 Creole mansion with courtyard contains eight rooms and suites (four mini-suites for two, three suites that sleep four, and a fourth-floor two-bedroom apartment for up to six), all with private entrances.
