Bed and breakfasts with a connection to dinosaurs

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

Dinosaurs have fascinated humans since the first discovery of fossils. If you would like a first-hand look at the fossils and bones these creatures left behind for us to study, there are plenty of bed and breakfasts where you can base your exploration. The inns listed here are a few of many located near museums and other dinosaur hot spots.

Baker St. Harbour
Granbury, Texas
A stay at this two-story Queen Anne Victorian should provide all the rest you'll need between dinosaur hunting excursions. Located in nearby Glen Rose is Dinosaur Valley State Park, a 1,500 acre park along the Paluxy River. This park is said to contain some of the best preserved dinosaur tracks in the world. Park officials note, however, that the dinosaur tracks are located in the riverbed, so visitors should call ahead to check on river conditions.

Taste The Past Bed and Breakfast
Drumheller, Alberta, Canada
The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is in the same town (Drumheller) as this B&B. The museum holds an exhibit on the Burgess Shale, a layer of rock which contains one of the most important fossil discoveries ever made, and also a fossil art exhibit. Day camps and explorer programs for children also are available.

Falcon's Ledge Bed and Breakfast
Altamont, Utah
In addition to offering visitors a private canyon and terrific fly fishing, this inn sits about an hour away from Dinosaur National Monument, the largest quarry of Jurassic Period dinosaur bones ever discovered. This site, discovered by paleontologist Earl Douglas in 1909, was designated a national monument in 1915. A year-round visitor center has been built over the quarry to protect the fossilized dinosaur bones and skeletons.
