Wyman Hotel and Inn, The
Silverton, Colorado

Rails: A converted Southern Pacific caboose with an antique bed, two-person whirlpool tub and sitting area with a fireplace/stove, the Candlelight Caboose sits in the courtyard of the Wyman Hotel.

Breakfast: A full gourmet breakfast is served at the hotel. A four-course candlelit dinner can be arranged in advance.

More: Listed on the National Register of Historical Places, this 1902 red-sandstone hotel offers 16 guest rooms. Guests can take part in the wine and cheese social hour and afternoon tea. Silverton is located in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, about 50 miles north of Durango, and can be accessed via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.


Northern Rail Traincar Suites
Two Harbors, Minnesota

Rails: The 17 guest rooms of Northern Rail are housed in train cars and connected by an enclosed walkway. There are three Conductor Suites, each with a king or queen bed, a living area with queen pullout sofa, and a refrigerator and microwave; and 14 Porter Suites, each with a queen bed and some with a full sofa pullout.

Breakfast: A continental breakfast is provided in the main building.

More: The second floor of the main building contains the Yardmaster Condo, available for short- or long-term rental. Two Harbors sits on 160 forested acres on the North Shore of Lake Superior, about 30 miles northeast of Duluth.

Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast
New York Mills, Minnesota

Rails: Two turn-of-the-century Pullman cars and one caboose are found at the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast. The Imperial Car was built in 1903 as a day coach with 80 seats and served on the North Coast Limited between Minnesota and Washington; the Palace Car was built in 1909 as a club dining car and used by the Northern Pacific Railroad until the 1960s. Today both the Imperial and the Palace cars contain a queen bed, double whirlpool, refrigerator and microwave, free-standing fireplace and mahogany paneling. There is also the 1893 Cozy Caboose, with a queen Murphy bed, whirlpool tub and refrigerator.

Breakfast: A full breakfast is served in the main house or delivered to the Imperial and Palace cars on request.

More: There is one guest room and one suite available in the 1903 Victorian-style main house. New York Mills is located about 100 miles northwest of St. Cloud.


Izaak Walton Inn, The
Essex, Montana

Rails: Four renovated caboose cottages with kitchenettes can be found on a hillside at the Izaak Walton Inn, which was built in 1939 as accommodations for Great Northern Railway workers and today overlooks a working rail yard between Glacier National Park and the Great Bear Wilderness. The orange caboose has one double bed and the original brakeman's chair in the cupola, the green and blue cabooses each have two double beds (one in the cupola), and the red caboose has four single beds (two in the cupola).

Breakfast: Regular rates include a continental breakfast; package rates include a full breakfast and dinner.

More: There are about 30 rooms and suites available at the inn's main lodge, and the grounds offer a sauna and ski and hiking trails. A variety of seasonal packages, including a spring weekend program designed for rail fans, is available. Nearly two dozen Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight trains pass by on a typical day, and train-related events are planned in May and October. The inn is located halfway between East and West Glacier, about 60 miles northeast of Glacier International Airport in Kalispell, Montana, and can be accessed via the Amtrak Empire Builder line.
