Will there be a telephone in our room?

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

Question: Will there be a telephone in our room?

Answer: Not always, but some inns do have in-room phone service. Sometimes they work like hotel phones -- only local calls are allowed unless you use a credit card. Some B&Bs even offer individual voice mail for each room.

Occasionally, the innkeeper operates on the honor system and asks that if you make any long distance calls, you use your credit card (but the phone system itself doesn't require that).

As more people use cell phones, this amenity is growing less important. However, if in-room phone service is important to you, ask before making a reservation.
