BedandBreakfast.com has just released its 2013 list of the ten best beach bed and breakfasts in the world and not only am I jealous of all those innkeepers who have inns in such stunning locations, I’m already dreaming up ways I can get to a few of them for my own getaway this winter! Here are five of my favorites from their list (which you can see in full here).

Beach Spa Bed & Breakfast
2420 Arctic Avenue Virginia Beach, VA 23451
757-422-2621
Rates: $169-309

I’m not only picking this one because it’s got four of my favorite words in its name, it makes my list because I’m a sucker for an upscale bathroom. Each of the eight clean, crisp rooms at this Virginia Beach inn contains bath toys like jetted tubs, encapsulated glass showers with rainfall shower heads, and hydro body massage panels. If you don’t feel sufficiently washed clean of all your stress by the super in-room shower experience, you can also check out the B&B's spa. It offers a wide range of massage treatments, any of which can be head in the inn’s “Spa Tower” that comes complete with a lending library and striking views of the Atlantic ocean.

Hacienda de La Costa
Patzcuaro 500, Sayulita, NY, Mexico
Phone not available; Email: terri@haciendadelacosta.com
Rates: $140-150

Speaking of favorite words, this Inn has another two of mine in its description: adults only. Sorry all you parents out there, but sometimes it is incredibly nice to enjoy a tropical pool with the sounds of the birds in the trees -- rather than cries of “Marco Polo” -- keeping you company. The pool here is small and lovely, set in a private courtyard bursting with greenery and splashes of color from tropical flowers. The rooms all feature cool tiles and hot colors and are scattered amongst the hacienda in 5 suites. There are two secluded beaches nearby and when you’re ready for civilization again, you can head into the bustling town of Sayulita, just two miles away.

Birds of a Feather B&B
206 Portsmouth Drive, Victoria, BC
1-800-730-4790
Rates: $165-215 CAD

Oftentimes, B&Bs that provide kitchen facilities in apartment-style rooms don’t serve breakfast, opting instead to either stock the fridge with goodies or just leave guests on their own. That’s not the case at this ocean front B&B in British Columbia. Each of the three suites here offers a kitchenette and private entrance, but a full cooked breakfast is served every morning either in the oceanfront dining room or waterfront deck. All the suites have private entrances, but for mingling, there’s a rooftop deck with gorgeous views of the ocean and the distant Olympic Mountains. Miles of hiking and biking trails stretch away right from the Inn’s front door, and your stay includes free use of the kayaks, canoes and bicycles, so there’s plenty of beach exploring to do!

Ho'oilo House
138 Awaiku St, Lahaina, HI 96761
1-808-667-6669
Rates: $229-369

For me, it’s all about the water and the natural materials at this Maui B&B. There are large bowls stationed in the yard that pour water into the pool like an offering to one of Hawaii’s numerous gods. The bathrooms have tubs made from hammered copper, Crem marble and Blue Pearl stone. And the outdoor showers feature custom-carved showerheads and even more natural elements like lava rock and Ivorystone. But man can not live on rocks alone, so fortunately, the inn also serves a super-fresh breakfast featuring homemade bread and biscuits, which can be taken by the pool, as rainbows stretch overhead.

La Mer & Dewey House
504 South Street
Key West, FL 33040
1-305-296-6577
Rates: $199-475

What list of beach B&Bs would be complete without one from Key West? In La Mer Hotel & Dewey House, you actually get two lodging choices -- connected by lovely tropical gardens. There are 19 rooms in all, each decorated with rich vibrant fabrics in an updated British Colonial style. Generous verandahs offer a great perch from which to soak up the salt air. The beach -- as well as all of Key West’s major attractions -- is just a short walk away. Breakfasts feature homemade quiches and made-to-order waffles.
