Maitland, Florida
While staying in various bed and breakfasts over the years, Carole M. Ballard and her husband always thought that becoming innkeepers would be something they would do. After 18 years in corporate life, they decided to make their dream a reality.
Today, Carole has been the innkeeper at Thurston House in central Florida, just 10 minutes from Orlando and 30 minutes from Disney World, for the past 16 years. "Everything just fell into place here," she says. So far, she has welcomed guests from 21 countries, all 50 states, and four territories.
Carole took some time to answer a few questions about Thurston House and life as an innkeeper.
Please tell us a little about your inn's history.
This house was built in 1885 by wealthy businessman Cyrus B. Thurston of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He came down for the winters until his death in 1915. Since then, there have only been three other families, then it was bought by the City of Maitland.
The city's original thought was to tear down the house as it was the eight acres of land they wanted. Instead, they decided to make it sound and decide what to do with it. We now lease it from the city and have been open for business over 16 years.
What are some of Thurston House's unique features?
The fact that we are in the middle of eight acres of lakefront land and just five miles from downtown Orlando is astounding.
How do you make a stay at Thurston House special?
I offer the best that I can possibly give my guests, from the bed linens and towels to the cheese that I serve at 5 p.m. Breakfast is always by candlelight, something guests really get a kick out of.
What are some of the attractions in your area that guests seem to enjoy the most?
There are several historical museums in Maitland, such as the Waterhouse residence Museum and the Maitland art Center. Just five minutes away is Winter Park with their Park Avenue area. The Morse Museum of Art is there and features fabulous Tiffany displays. There is also a very popular scenic boat tour. Up and down the avenue are great shops and restaurants.
Another 15 to 20 minutes north will get you to several state parks, including one where the manatees swim. And 10 minutes south takes you to beautiful Leu Gardens, a 52-acre botanical park.
What might a guest expect to have at a "typical" breakfast in your inn?
Always candlelight, fresh fruit, and beverages, an egg dish, a meat dish and a baked good dish. Most of my corporate guests like a lighter fare so cereal, baked goods and something to toast. Particular favorites are Eggs Florentine and Stina's Omelet.
Which is your personal favorite room at your bed and breakfast?
I like them all as they are unique and different. The Cubbedge is a quiet and peaceful room overlooking the side garden and camellia bushes. The O'Heir is very good for early risers as the morning sun starts there. The Hirsch is great with an afternoon sun and glow on the other side yard.
