Old Carriage Inn Bed and Breakfast

Shipshewana, Indiana

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

Art and Sandy Oswald are a rarity among innkeepers -- they never stayed in a bed and breakfast before taking over one of their own, the Old Carriage Inn Bed and Breakfast in Shipshewana, Indiana. They bought the building because it had plenty of office space -- the bed and breakfast was an extra. Now veterans of the B&B experience, their inn features a number of special weekends each year, such as murder mysteries, professional storytelling, and stamp art workshops.

Art took some time out of his busy schedule (in addition to running the bed and breakfast with Sandy, he holds down another job) to answer a few questions for us.

How do you make a stay at your B&B special?

Most of our guests come for the the Shipshewana Flea Market, which is adjacent to our property. (The flea market is on Tuesday and Wednesday.) They appreciate being able to park here and walk over to the market. Also, the live music on Tuesday nights with refreshments afterward has a bonding effect on the guests. They get to know each other, trade addresses, and make new friends.

Which is your personal favorite room at your bed and breakfast?

They're all very nice. We redecorated two room this last winter (1996-97). I suppose either of those would be a favorite.

What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?

It's a unique travel experience that you should try at least once.

Why did you want to become innkeepers?

I bought the place when I was looking for office space. The B&B was an aside. The people I bought it from ran the B&B on a much smaller level. I ran a publishing company out of the basement for 4 years.

What's the most interesting thing that has ever happened to you as innkeepers?

On Tuesday evening, we provide live music for the guests and encourage them to participate. We have had some really good experiences with guests and their talents.

Why and when did you decide to offer murder mystery weekends?

We started them (in 1996). We don't have a lot of business on the weekends, so we looked for something that would attract people for Friday and Saturday as well.

What's your favorite part about being innkeepers?

Providing a service people seem to appreciate.

What's your least favorite part?

Obnoxious and demanding guests.

When did you first stay at a bed and breakfast?

Just this year (1997), in St. Louis.

What do you remember most about your first stay in a B&B?

It seemed odd to come down to breakfast at a stranger's home.

What advice would you give to people interested in becoming innkeepers?

Be prepared to have strangers in your home. If you're okay with that, it can be very rewarding.

Note: Since this article was originally published, Old Carriage Inn has stopped offering murder mystery weekends.
