The Swag
A luxury bed and breakfast resort in Waynesville, North Carolina

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

With 250 acres at a 5,000-foot elevation and a private entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, The Swag has been applauded by USA Today, Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report and Condé Nast Johansens.

This Mobil Four-Star country retreat about 50 miles west of Asheville is open from spring to fall. Weekend rates range from $490 for Danny's Room to $785 for the two-bedroom Two Story cabin.

All accommodations include robes, CD player, and satellite radio; the decor features handmade quilts, woven rugs, early American rustic antiques, and original artwork. Among the features available in some of the 12 guest rooms are a beautiful view, fireplace, Jacuzzi, sauna, two-person steam shower, two baths, sleeping loft, sitting room, terrace or balcony.

Guests can also choose from three secluded, child-friendly cabins, each with a living room, fireplace, wet bar and private porch or deck: the Woodshed Cottage log house with porch swing; the log Cabin with steam shower and double whirlpool tub; and the two-bedroom Two Story cabin with steam showers, soaking tub, billiard room and balconies.

The grounds at the Swag Country Inn boast a 2.5-mile nature trail with hideaway stops, waterfall, spring-fed pond, swinging bridge and water wheel. Guests can play wallyball or racquetball on the Lodge's regulation underground court, take up a game of badminton or croquet outdoors, relax in the mountain-view spa or redwood sauna, hang around on a hammock or rope swing, or pump out tunes on the player piano.

Nature walks and talks with special guests are held periodically and focus on such topics as birds, elk, black bears and other wildlife, wildflowers, geology, Cherokee Indian culture and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Guests are served a buffet-style breakfast, which might include cider-simmered oatmeal, fresh juices, pancakes, waffles or pastries; a picnic lunch with such entrees as California BLT, Chilled Poached Salmon Wrap, Greek Salad or Antipasti Plate; and a four-course dinner featuring award-winning gourmet cuisine.
