Broadlawns is an 1881 Victorian home touted at the time of its construction as "a grand house and one of the most ... beautiful in the borough."
I say that it remains both. One of my favorite features is the stained glass window you encounter on the master staircase. The Victorian parlor is well-decorated with loads of antiques.
With just three guest rooms, Broadlawns is a perfect getaway for those who prefer a quiet vacation. We stayed in the General Washington Room, which has its own small balcony, a working fireplace, and a canopied bed.
Other rooms are the General Howe (four poster bed, fireplace, and a private bath with its own fireplace) and the Brandywine Suite, which includes a formal Victorian sitting room with imported marble shower facilities and a Jacuzzi. All three rooms have private baths, although only the Brandywine Suite has an attached bath. (You leave your room for the other two, although only you will be using it. We prefer private, attached baths, but didn't mind this setup.)
Innkeepers Bill and Dorene Winters were more than hospitable, offering complimentary glasses of wine when we arrived and giving us tips on where to eat dinner. Breakfast was delicious, an egg caserole with several side dishes and freshly-squeezed orange juice.
Broadlawns is well-situated for a full weekend of activities. It's close enough to Pennsylvania's Amish country for a day trip, and Philadelphia also is nearby. Shoppers will appreciate the King of Prussia Mall, while flower lovers should make plans to stop at Longwood Gardens. Other nearby stops include the Brandywine River Museum, Chaddsford Winery, and historic Brandywine Battlefield.
