This Relaix & Chateau property, applauded by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report, is located in northcentral Pennsylvania, about 180 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and 80 miles south of Buffalo, New York. Rates range from $299 for some of the rooms in the Big House to $1,049 for the Roost (a four-bedroom cabin).
The 1929 Big House contains one guest room and one suite on both its first and second floors; features might include a wood-burning fireplace or a private terrace or sunporch. There are also seven child-friendly cabins, some of which accommodate pets. Among them are: Cabin One, with a wet bar, seating area with fireplace, and dressing area; the 1916 Miller Cabin, with two fireplaces, his and her bathrooms, living area, kitchen and screened porch; the 1940s Jill's Cabin, with two guest rooms with fireplaces that can be rented separately or as a unit; and the Hutch, with fireplaces in three rooms (living room, bedroom and screened porch), dressing area and kitchen.
Two cabins can accommodate up to eight guests each and are located a few minutes' walk from the Big House: the 1939 brick-and-stone Roost has a living area with fireplace, master bedroom with fireplace and his and her baths, three additional bedrooms and two other baths; and the Guest House on Skipper Lake has a living room with fireplace, four bedrooms with private baths, kitchen and courtyard hot tub.
Even more secluded is the Forest Hideout for two, available May to November and accessed via a winding, unpaved road up a wooded hillside. This stone-and-brick cottage has two fireplaces, one indoors and the other on the outdoor terrace with barbecue area.
On-site facilities include a 60-foot outdoor pool; two Rubico clay tennis courts; a gym with exercise equipment and half-court basketball; and a game room with billiards, pool, darts and Par Puzzles.
Guests can spend time fishing, canoeing, paddleboating, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Also available are spa services, guided fly-fishing, and skeet and trap shooting. Among the packages available are the Castaway, which includes a fly-casting lesson and four hours of guided fishing, and the Breakaway, which includes a beginner or refresher skeet lesson and four rounds of skeet.
All meals are served in the Big House's Great Hall, but guests can opt for an in-room breakfast or have lunch on the terrace or porch or as a picnic. Also the guests of the Big House's two suites can choose to have all meals, including their four-course dinner, brought to their room.
