Recommended bed and breakfasts in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hamshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Rye, New Hampshire - Joy Steinberg: The place was lovely, immaculate, inviting and indulging. They include a gourmet breakfast, and it's a completely satisfying culinary treat. That's saying quite a bit about breakfast! The folks who run it were very nice and I felt comfortable and well taken care of, but never intruded upon. Fireplaces and comfy corners abound.
Woodstock, Vermont - Bette Swanson: Really nice country B&B situated 1/2 mile from the center of town. Comfortable living and nice food. Mr. Paul followed our footsteps 40 miles to return my husband's medication we forgot. How's that for service!
Woodstock, Connecticut - Bill Cesario: Taylors Corner is in a beautiful section of Connecticut with winding roads, rolling hills, hiking trails and many farms in the area. The rooms are nice and comfortable, and the open hearth cooking was excellent. The corn bread was the best I've ever had. There are only a few rooms, so you're not tripping over other guests.
West Chester, Pennsylvania - Elizabeth Arneson: A wonderful three-room inn not far from Philadelphia. Although we spent only one night, we were quite enamored with it. Lovely neighborhood, gorgeous stained glass window and friendly feline.
North Conway, New Hampshire - Debbie MacNeill: An 1842 cottage with modern amenities. Many rooms have a gas fireplace or Jacuzzi tub; some have both. Innkeepers are delightful and breakfast is to die for! Highly recommended for a romantic getaway.
Cornish, New Hampshire - Marianne Odell: Besides the warm hospitality, the B&B itself is exquisite. My husband and I have been looking to buy an inn for two years, and after staying here, everything else pales in comparison! Period furnishings.
Lee, Massachusetts -
John Fischer: Located in historic Lee, this lovely country-style home was built in 1862. It features beautiful Victorian furnishings, two suites with private baths, TVs/VCRs in each room and colorful cottage gardens.
Lee, Massachusetts -
John Fischer: This Federal-era manor house in historic Lee offers all of the luxury and comfort of a traditionally furnished inn. You can choose among six rooms, three suites and a separate guest house all providing private baths, air conditioning. Some offer wood burning fireplaces and Jacuzzis.
Barto, Pennsylvania - Susie and Tony Sheidy: Quiet, relaxing and romantic. Fishing just a few feet away in a private lake. The country breakfast prepared us for the miles of walking through the beautiful Berks County countryside.
Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania - Susie and Tony Sheidy: Our room was breathtaking, decorated in Pennsylvania German motif, with a four-poster king-size bed, Jacuzzi tub and fireplace. We were treated with kid gloves and hope to return in the fall.
This five-floor, 19th-century townhouse with 11 guest rooms and an elevator welcomes children and may require a stay of at least two nights. My husband and I found the hosts helpful and friendly and enjoyed the continental plus breakfast. We appreciated this Chelsea inn's easy access to public transportation and to one of my favorite shops, Olde Good Things.
Portland, Maine - Cynthia Johnson: We visited for our 35th anniversary and it was just heavenly. A beautifully restored Victorian-style inn with a romantic setting. Lots to see and do within walking distance. Phil and Sue Cox were perfect hosts.
Adamstown, Pennsylvania - Elizabeth Arneson: Our first B&B stay was at the Adamstown Inn on our honeymoon night; we liked it so much we returned for Valentine's. Located in the "Antique Capital of America," easy access to Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Ludlow, Vermont - Gerard Reisert: We've stayed here three years in a row and have found it to be charming, comfortable, cozy and well located for skiing at Okemo. Excellent full breakfasts. Delightful innkeepers. All in all, an excellent choice.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Stevie A. Jones: Owner Maryanne provided interesting contacts for activities (horseback riding, etc.) and is a marvelous cook. A pond for fishing, trails to hike or ski, plus entertainment by her Brittany spaniel, Daisy.
Cape May, New Jersey - Gary Thorne Sr.: The Peter Shields Inn is a gorgeous 1907 oceanfront mansion with breathtaking views, beautiful antique furnishings in every room, and an award-winning restaurant on the first floor. Very romantic!
Marienville, Pennsylvania - Don Chandler: We thoroughly enjoyed a rain-filled two-day visit with innkeepers Ronald and Mollie McDonald. A beautiful home (an 1833 Victorian about 100 miles outside Pittsburgh) and marvelous company.
Rockport, Massachusetts - Dennis Helfand: This inn, located in historic Rockport on five magnificent acres and surrounded by the ocean, certainly deserves to be listed here. Their Web site and property are first-class.
Central Valley, New York - Richard and Victoria Santini: A true B&B with all the amenities and ambiance of a five-star hotel. We've stayed at many inns and would rate Stone Gate and its hosts, Drs. Gillian and Robert Switala, as the best.
Lititz, Pennsylvania - Jan Philips: North of Lancaster, this is the perfect respite hosted by innkeepers who know how to pamper you and respect your privacy. Book the Lake of Geneva room for a little bit of Switzerland and a whole lot of heaven!
Nantucket, Massachusetts - Kim Anusewicz: A comfortable little inn on the island of Nantucket, which is located just about 30 miles off the coast of Massachussettes, on Cape Cod.
Lancaster, New Hampshire - Ed Sanders: In Great North Woods region. Hiking, snowmobiling, theme parks, museums, hunting. Owners are retired school teachers with a passion for fine glassware. Plunk down on their porch and watch the leaves change.
