The Most Bed and Breakfasts

A state-by-state look at the number of U.S. inns

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

California, with more than 800 bed and breakfasts, leads the U.S. in terms of how many innkeepers operate there. With just 14 inns, North Dakota is at the other end of the spectrum.

These numbers come from a nationwide listing of bed and breakfasts available from Abacus Computing; their information came from the Professional Association of Innkeepers International. So while the numbers are just a snapshot of PAII membership and are not an accurate total of all bed and breakfasts in the U.S., they do provide some useful information.

California (804 inns) is followed by Massachusetts (723). New York (508) and Pennsylvania (425) are third and fourth. With 368 inns, Michigan is fifth, followed by Maine (334), Washington (321), Texas (267), Alaska (258) and Virginia (250) rounding out the top 10.

Perhaps the most striking thing about this list is that seven out of the top 10 states are cold-weather states, and two others (California and Texas) are so large that it would be shocking if they weren't in the top 10.

Altogether, these 10 states account for 4,258 PAII member inns, roughly 45 percent of the 9,372 inns which Abacus Computing says are available on labels. (The Abacus Web site indicates they also have a list of 13,000 inns taken from PAII's archive of potential members.)
