Charleston Bed and Breakfasts - South Carolina

Bed and Breakfasts in Ansonborough and the Business District

By Elizabeth Arneson, About.com

Charleston, South Carolina, is a city that breathes history. The inns on this page were built before 1905 and are in the Ansonborough and Business District neighborhoods of Charleston.

ANSONBOROUGH

  • Barksdale House Inn
At the Barksdale House Inn, a 1778 town house near the corner of Meeting and George streets, there are 10 rooms (nine with king or queen beds) in the main house and four rooms (all with queen beds) in the carriage house. In the main house, five rooms offer a whirlpool bath and six include a gas fireplace.

  • Fantasia Bed and Breakfast
Built for Mary Scott around 1813, this classic Charleston single house has a master suite with a fireplace, sitting room area and whirlpool for two, as well as two second-floor rooms with queen beds and access to a shared piazza. There are additional accommodations in the carriage and kitchen house facilities at this George Street B&B, which serves a full breakfast on the lower-level piazza or in the dining room.

  • Jasmine House
This 1843 Greek Revival mansion on Hasell Street in the historic Ansonborough area offers six rooms in the main house and four in the carriage house; some rooms include a private piazza or a gas fireplace, and one features both a fireplace and double Jacuzzi. The garden courtyard (which has a Jacuzzi) can be reserved for small wedding ceremonies, and golf packages are available.

  • King George IV Inn
Located on George Street in the historic district, this 1790s Federal-style home is four stories tall with three levels of Charleston porches. Original wide-planked hardwood floors with Oriental rugs, decorative fireplaces and antiques are found in its seven rooms and three suites, and most accommodations contain queen beds.

  • Maison Du Pre
Surrounded by tall garden walls and wrought-iron gates, three restored Charleston single houses and two carriage houses, plus courtyards with three fountains, form this 15-room 1804 inn on East Bay Street in the historic Ansonborough district. The guest quarters, which include an executive suite, honeymoon suite, and carriage house kitchen suite, are decorated with antiques and Oriental carpets.

  • Phoebe Pember House
Six rooms, all with sitting areas, desks and antiques, occupy this 1807 Federal-style Charleston single house and carriage house. Large piazzas overlook the private walled gardens of this Society Street inn, which also offers massage, aromatherapy, and fitness classes at its studio next door. It is the birthplace of Civil War heroine Phoebe Pember, matron of the Civil War hospital Chimborazo in Richmond, then the largest hospital in the Western Hemisphere.

BUSINESS DISTRICT

  • Gateway House Inn and Carriage House
At this 1802 inn on Burns Lane, there are five guest rooms (most with queen beds and one with a private balcony) in the main house. Next door, the carriage house can be rented in its entirety for up to four guests or as two separate guest rooms with a shared bath; it includes two bedrooms, a bath, a kitchen and dining area, and a sun porch. Pets are welcome in the Courtyard Suite of the main house.

  • Meeting Street Suites
Located on the third floor of an 1850s building on the corner of Meeting and Hasell Streets in the Business District, all four suites provide a king-size bed, a whirlpool tub, a sitting area, a kitchenette and a high-speed Internet connection. A contemporary look is present in the two-bedroom suite and one 1-bedroom suite; the two other one-bedroom suites have 19th-century American furnishings and traditional decor. Breakfast is not provided; a restaurant and bar are located on the first floor.

  • Victoria House Inn
Built in 1889 as the Charleston YMCA, this three-story Romanesque-style brick inn on King Street features Victorian antique and reproduction furnishings in its 18 rooms and suites. Some guest quarters include fireplaces and whirlpool baths.
