The Reappearing Hat
A Strange But True Innkeeper Story

By , About.com Guide

Birchwood Inn
Innkeeper Ellen Gutman Chenaux
7 Hubbard St.
Lenox, Massachusetts

Birchwood Inn has several friendly ghosts to which we attribute strange occurrences.

Seven months after I purchased Birchwood, Steve, a friend and colleague, who owned an inn down the hill in Lenox, died after a short illness. For several weeks prior to his death, he had been looking unsuccessfully for his favorite hat.

The day he died, this hat suddenly appeared on the coat rack in my pantry. I like to believe that this was Steve's way of saying, "good-bye."
