Many bed and breakfasts describe themselves as "eco-friendly" or "environmentally conscious," and many of them really are. These inns, however, offer guests a special ability to interact with and appreciate the environment.

1. Birds of a Feather Oceanfront Bed and Breakfast

Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

This inn is located on a 120-acre migratory bird and water sanctuary, surrounded by 600 acres of old-growth forest. Canoes, kayaks and other excursions are available right from the B&B's own dock. Rates range from about $120 to $160 per night.

2. Soldotna Bed and Breakfast Lodge

Soldotna, Alaska

The Kenai Peninsula, home to this B&B, is known for its beautiful wilderness. Near the inn, guests might be able to see bear, moose, beaver, otter, caribou and other animals. The innkeepers are happy to help arrange guided ecotours or to give guests suggestions on self-guided excursions. Rates range from $75 to $380 per night.

3. Tomah Mountain Lodge

Bilpin, New South Wales, Australia

Guided ecotours are available at nearby Mount Tomah Botanic Garden, part of a rainforest ecology. More than 125 species of birds live on Mount Tomah. Rates range from about $150 to $170 per night.

4. Black Sheep Inn

Chugchilan, Cotopaxi, Ecuador

This inn has been named one of the top 10 ecolodges in the world by Outside magazine. Innkeepers Andres Hammerman and Michelle Kirby are Americans who fell in love with the area, purchased land and built the B&B. Rates range from $25 to $70 per person.

5. Bertie's B&B

Vaitele, Apia, Samoa

This inn, perfect for budget-conscious travelers, is about four miles from the Samoan capital of Apia, where many eco-tours can be arranged. Rates range from about $25 to $75 per night.
