Bed and Breakfasts in the Falkland Islands

One of the most secluded getaway locations in the world.

From , former About.com Guide

The Falkland Islands, an overseas U.K. territory, are one of the most remote destinations on earth. The islands are in the South Atlantic Ocean, near the southernmost tip of South America, 300 miles east of the coast of Argentina.

The British influence is most visible in the capital of Stanley (population about 2,000), which also is the smallest and most remote capital city in the world. Other towns are even more remote, so don't plan to undertake many city-based activities if you visit the Falklands.

What can you do? Enjoy spectacular views and extraordinary wildlife. Take long, meandering walks. Enjoy the pubs in Stanley. Take advantage of the Maine-like weather, with temperatures ranging from 22 degrees Farenheit in July to 70 degrees Farenheit in January. And relax.

None of the accommodations in the Falklands are what most people would consider full-fledged hotels; all offer at least some aspect of the B&B experience.

Falkland Island Bed and Breakfasts and Small Hotels

  • Carcass Island
Visitors can rent two cottages during the summer season (remember that summer in the Falklands -- and the rest of the Southern Hemisphere -- is winter in the United States and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere).

  • Dolphin's Guest House, The
Located in Stanley, this guest house was originally built in 1863. It offers a total of 10 rooms, all of which appear to have shared bathrooms.

Hattie Lee, owner/manager of the lodge, has earned a reputation for creating excellent food using natural ingredients from the Port Howard area. Port Howard's permanent population is 20.

  • Saunders Island
Two self-catering lodges are included in this "settlement"; the larger of the two can sleep up to 10 people, while the other has three bedrooms. More adventurous guests may wish to visit the "Neck," which, according to the web site, "offers superb wildlife at your door but is isolated - you may see no one from the time you are transported to the cabin until early on the morning of the day of departure."

  • Sea Lion Lodge
This is a more modern structure, built in 1986. Nine rooms are offered, most with private showers. The Sea Lion Lodge is the only place to stay on Sea Lion Island.

  • Tenacres
Tenacres is a Falkland Islands tour company that also provides accommodations on the outskirts of Stanley.

  • Weddell Island
With about 60,000 acres, Weddell Island is the third-largest of the Falklands. Self-catering cottages and camping are available, or guests can choose to stay in the farmhouse.

  • West Lagoons Farm
A nine-hole golf course is located near this 5,000-sheep farm. Visitors can stay for up to five nights in the family's home.

Falkland Island Accommodations Directories

Les Baker, a consultant and B&B enthusiast who lives in Bethesda, Maryland, has visited the Falkland Islands. He answered some questions to help us become more familiar with this secluded getaway.

Could you describe the experience of visiting the Falkland Islands?

The Falkland Islands are the most remote destination on earth with scheduled jet service. 2,400 people live in the Connecticut-sized 700 islands, primarily in the capital, Stanley.

The Falklands are blessed with diverse wildlife, mainly five kinds of penguins, whales, dolphins and a wide assortment of birds. B&Bs evolved since the shepherds were paid only twice a year. To supplement their income, they opened full-board accommodations.

Accommodations are unique in the Falklands. First, to arrive one takes the national carrier, FIGAS. The eight-seat planes land on private grass landing strips at the B&Bs. The accommodations are simple and clean.

Four things separate the experience. First, the immense amount of wildlife out the front door. Second, each B&B farms its own organic produce. Third, almost all the B&Bs have their own golf course. Finally, each B&B has incredible fishing, probably the best trout fishing in the world.

What makes the Falklands a good place to visit?

The islands have a wonderful Maine-like climate. It is rather undiscovered, as very few Americans visit. Also, there is virtually no crime, English is spoken, and there are no fast food restaurants or traffic lights.
