West Dover, Vermont
In the southern Vermont village of West Dover, about 140 miles from Boston and 230 miles from New York, the Inn at Sawmill Farm offers guests accommodations in a converted barn with hand-hewn post and beams and weathered boards. A member of Relais & Chateaux, both the inn and its restaurant have received the Mobil Four-Star Award for Excellence; the restaurant has also been honored with Wine Spectator's Grand Award. Accolades have been supplied by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report, Conde Nast Traveler, Forbes.com and Travel + Leisure.
Rates, which include a full country breakfast and gourmet dinner, range from $375 to $900.
There are 10 guest rooms and suites (two with Jacuzzis and four with balconies) in the main building and 11 fireplace rooms and suites (some with Jacuzzis and most with balconies or decks) in the cottages. While each guest room is filled with lovely fabrics and lush furnishings, most do not contain a telephone or television (the exception is the Carriage House, which offers local phone and Internet access). In-room massage services and use of a nearby fitness club are available.
The inn offers packages catering to such interests as wine tasting, a personally designed dinner menu, golf, sporting clays and fly-fishing. Its grounds boast a swimming pool, tennis court, trout ponds for canoeing and fishing, flower gardens and two gazebos.
